Airport Ellenikon, Athens
Airport Ellenikon, Athens

After the Ellenikon Airport ⁄ Athens shut down in 2001, the 620-hectare site was partially used for the Olympic Games in 2004.
At the same time, Prime Minister Costas Simitis announced the plans for the largest park in Europe on the grounds of airport – some also spoke from the Central Park Athens.
What remains, is just a huge, concreted wasteland.
Meanwhile, the Lamda Development company (please look also here) has submitted a bid of 915 million euros for the area and promises to invest there a total of 7 billion euros – the start of work is supposed to be in 2016.
The plan covering the project is a large park, a casino, an aquarium, a marina, a new beach promenade, two hotels, a shopping center, a theme park, high quality luxury apartments etc.
The whole project – so Lamda Development – will redefine Athens as a tourist attraction and as an international business and entertainment center.
But more and more people from the surrounding neighborhoods are protesting against this privatisation programme and call instead for a public park on the airport ground.
