The Eurobank – formerly known as EFG Eurobank Ergasis – received 4,2 billion euros from the euro bailout fund in summer 2012. More than 40 percent of the Eurobank belonged to Spiros Latsis.
Who is Spiros Latsis?
He is the richest Greek, residing in Monaco. In addition to his banking business he owns a shipping company, 30 percent of the oil trade Hellenic Petroleum, the Privatjetfirma Private Air, media holdings, most exclusive real estate, e.g. Mr Latsis owns over 200 real estates in the canton of Geneva alone, a real estate company (Lamda Development) and the 122–meter superyacht Alexander.
Incidentally, one can buy the superyacht Alexander at the moment for 35 million euros or alternatively you can charter for 385000 euros per week. Also Latsis former college friend and former European Commission President José Manuel Barroso made a trip with this yacht, as well as Prince Charles.
In 2006 Spiros Latsis received an honorary doctorate for ›his outstanding scientific achievements‹ from the Private University of Witten ⁄ Herdecke. During the ceremony the president of the University, Prof. Wolfgang Glatthaar, emphasized ›that imagination, skill and creativity are essential key factors for macroeconomic reality as well as for successful entrepreneurship‹.
According to Forbes, the entire property of the Latsis family was worth 3.3 billion dollars in 2013.
In 2012 the asset were 2.6 billion dollars, according to Forbes.
Small note:
Before the financial crash in 2008, there were six dollar billionaires in Iceland, today there is no one.
The Icelanders refused to save their ailing banks and financial system in contrast to the southern European crisis countries.
