Javier, goatkeeper

»I'm living with goats since my childhood. Even my parents already owned goats.
Since the 1970ies I'm living with my goats in the countryside. At the moment I have 210 goats which usually produce about 3000 kg goat cheese per year but this year it will be a lot less because the wolf killed 100 of my goats and some more were were injured. This is a disaster for me.
I sell the cheese directly in a farm shop, on markets and fairs. Since the 80ies Spain's animal farmers have been experiencing a crisis which is linked to the European Community. A lot of farmers were closed during that time in order to obtain subsidies from the EU for the construction of roads or airports. The Spanish peasants here presented a competition to the northern European countries.
We have had everything, good food and a fine climate.
Spain gets also a lot of money from the EU to maintain the biodiversity but in return the wolf has been resettled here. However the wolves kill our sheep and goats and the conservationists say this wasn't the wolf but wild dogs. The conservationists don't see the problems which I have due to wolves. And the government sees wolves just as an interesting animals, but denies the problems which are caused through them.
For the last five years I have been passing on my knowledge of the goat farming in courses, because people have forgotten it all. These courses usually last six months.
Now, I'm 60 years old, so I don't have so much to do and see my future positively. You have to do something you like and then it stops to be work.«
